We sell cold and heat, so we have every reason to oversell the research. We'd rather show you exactly what the studies found — the strong evidence, the thin evidence, and the things the data simply doesn't say.

What cold water actually does.

Cold immersion produces a sharp, measurable stress response. Some downstream effects are well supported; others are oversold. Here is each one, graded.

Plasma noradrenaline · vs rest
A flat baseline, then a sharp climb — the acute spike measured at 14°C. +530%
Mechanistic

A flood of noradrenaline

One hour at 14°C raised plasma noradrenaline +530% and dopamine +250%, with metabolic rate up ~350%. Adrenaline was unchanged.

An acute hormonal spike measured against rest  not proof of lasting mood or focus benefit. Don't read the dopamine figure as a durable "dopamine boost."

Thin evidence

Mood & stress

A 2025 meta-analysis found a transient drop in stress ~12h after immersion but no improvement in mood, and no benefit immediately or at 24–48h.

The well-known "cold for depression" reference (Shevchuk 2008) is an untested hypothesis, not a trial. There is no trial evidence cold treats depression.

Fewer sick days

A daily hot-to-cold shower for 30 days cut self-reported sickness absence by 29% versus control.

Actual illness days were not reduced people felt able to work despite being ill. All outcomes self-reported, no immune markers. It's resilience, not "boosted immunity."

Mechanistic

Recruits brown fat

A 10-day cold-acclimation protocol increased brown-fat activity and nonshivering thermogenesis; subjects shivered less and felt warmer in the cold.

It shows metabolic adaptation, not fat loss. The authors only speculate it "may" counteract obesity there's no weight-loss outcome here. Cold plunging doesn't burn fat.

It can blunt muscle growth

Cold immersion straight after lifting attenuated anabolic signalling and type-II fibre growth versus active recovery, confirmed across two RCTs and a 2024 meta-analysis.

What the sauna data shows.

The strongest sauna evidence comes from one long-running Finnish cohort. The associations are large and dose-dependent — but they are associations, from mostly one population. We say so on every card.

Not just for men

In a cohort of 1,688 adults 51% women cardiovascular mortality fell as weekly sauna sessions rose, in both sexes, and improved risk prediction.

The first of these studies to include women, but still a single Finnish population, smaller, and self-selected. Association only.

Lower hypertension risk

Among 1,621 men without high blood pressure at baseline, 4–7×/week sauna use was linked to a 47% lower risk of developing hypertension.

The benefit at 2–3×/week was not statistically significant after adjustment. Observational, men only consistent with sauna's known short-term drop in blood pressure, but not proof.

Observational cohort

Lower dementia risk

Over ~20 years, 4–7×/week sauna use was associated with 66% lower dementia and 65% lower Alzheimer's risk versus once weekly.

Same Finnish male cohort and the same self-selection limits. Diagnoses came from registries. It shows a strong link it does not prove sauna prevents dementia.

The honest part

What the evidence does not say.

The research is genuinely promising. It's also widely overstated. These are the lines we won't cross, because the data doesn't support them.

Cold doesn't burn fat

Cold recruits brown fat and raises heat production, but no study here shows weight or fat loss. Anyone selling plunges as a fat-loss tool is ahead of the evidence.

Cold doesn't "boost immunity"

The shower trial found fewer sick days called in — but the same number of actual illness days, and no immune markers measured. That's resilience, not a stronger immune system.

Cold isn't a depression treatment

The popular reference is an untested hypothesis. Trials show, at most, a brief dip in stress — and no improvement in mood. We won't claim more.

Sauna isn't a workout

The heart rate looks like exercise, but it's passive heat. It won't build muscle or fitness. It complements training; it doesn't replace it.

Sauna studies are associations

The headline numbers come largely from one Finnish cohort of middle-aged men. Strong and dose-dependent — but observational, so they show a link, not proof of cause.

These numbers are for traditional dry heat

The sauna research used hot Finnish dry saunas (~80–100°C). It doesn't automatically transfer to infrared cabins, and the cold figures are for cold-water immersion specifically.

How we read it

Not all evidence is equal.

So we grade every claim above with one of four labels — and we never let a weaker tier borrow the confidence of a stronger one. A hormonal spike in a lab is not a health outcome; an association in a cohort is not proof of cause.

Trial / review

Randomised trials and systematic reviews. The strongest tier — though even here, sample sizes can be small.

Observational

Large cohorts followed over time. Shows strong associations, but cannot rule out confounding or prove cause.

Mechanistic

Small physiology studies showing how something works in the body. Useful, but not an outcome you would feel.

Hypothesis

A proposed idea with little or no trial backing. Interesting, but not evidence — and labelled as such.
