Below roughly $500 the only thing on the market is a steam tent stating 54–65°C. Those four numbers are the price bands, and each one buys a specific thing you cannot get in the band below it.

Under $500: warmth, not heat
At this level the Australian market offers portable steam tents and the cheaper infrared blankets. Kmart list a Devanti steam tent at $109.95 stating a 54°C maximum on 1000 W, and a Maxkon at $154.95 stating 65°C with a 10-minute heat-up. Infrared blankets run $199 from Bio Healing Australia stating 45–70°C, $299 from The Recovery Guys stating 25–80°C, and $497 from Steady State with no temperature published (September 2026).
What you get is heat applied to your body and a great deal of sweat. What you give up is air temperature, and with it the specific conditions all the sauna research was conducted in. You also give up durability. These are fabric and plastic assemblies with no warranty culture behind them, and the failure mode is usually a heating element or a zip, at which point the economics of repair do not work.
I want to be fair about this band rather than dismissive. If $150 is genuinely your budget, a steam tent is what exists, it will make you warm, and plenty of people enjoy them. It is simply not the same product category as a sauna, and any page telling you otherwise is taking advantage of the fact that both are sold under the same word.
$500 to $1,500: where dry heat starts
This is the band where air temperature above 80°C becomes purchasable, and it happens in two quite different ways.
Wood-fired portable tent saunas sit in this band and commonly state 90°C and above, which is hotter than anything electric at the price. It is a thin category dominated by very new sellers, so I would treat any specific price you find with the same caution you would apply to any months-old brand. The structural trade is the same whoever makes it: no electricity, higher temperature, and in return an outdoor-only product with a flue, a fire to manage and a twenty-minute head start before you get in.
Electric dry heat appears at $1,195 with the Kiuas Dry Sauna, which is ours: 85°C from a 1500 W element on a standard wall socket, one person seated, about 25 minutes to temperature, folds away. No stones, no löyly. Searching the Australian market in September 2026 I could not find a competing electric folding dry-heat portable rated to 80°C or above, which makes this a thin band rather than a competitive one.
Infrared tents also sit in this band, typically stating 45–65°C. Warmer than a blanket, cooler than dry heat, radiant rather than convective, and sold mostly by newer importers rather than the established cabin brands.
$1,500 to $5,000: cabins arrive
Crossing $3,000 changes the category. This is where a room replaces a tent, where two people can sit together, and where an electrician enters the budget.
Infrared cabins start lowest: Kiva's Rise 1-person at $3,229 stating up to 75°C, the 2-person at $3,499, Revel's Kora 2-person at $4,249 stating 70°C (September 2026). Most run on a 10 A plug, so no rewiring.
Traditional stone-stove cabins begin at $3,747 with Revel's Kuusi 2-person on a Harvia 3.5–4.5 kW stove stating 85°C, and Kiva's Reset 2-person at $4,495, reduced from $5,995, stating up to 90°C with 10 kg of stones. The cheapest stone-stove sauna I could verify anywhere in the market is a Smartmak 4-person barrel listed through Wholesale Superstore at $3,999 presale against a $6,500 regular price, stating 90°C on a 6 kW Harvia.
The hidden cost in this band is electrical. Traditional heaters need a hardwired dedicated circuit, and Kiva's Reset 4-person specifies 25 A while Revel's Solaris 4-person specifies 32 A. Get a switchboard quote before you commit, because the distance from your board to the sauna can move the total by more than the difference between two models.
$5,000 and above: space, people and permanence
Above $5,000 you are buying capacity and build quality rather than a different kind of heat. Kiva's Ritual outdoor cabins are listed at $6,995 for 2–3 people and $7,995 for 4–6 in Classic trim, both stating 90°C on a 6 kW Harvia with 20 kg of stones. Revel's Eden 4-person barrel is from $6,997 and the 8-person from $8,999. Revel's Virta 2-person outdoor cabin is from $10,697 (September 2026).
Premium infrared occupies its own tier. Clearlight publish Australian prices from $14,999 for a 1-person Sanctuary to $23,999 for a 4-person corner model. Sunlighten do not publish Australian prices at all, routing every model to a quote form, and neither brand publishes a maximum operating temperature on their Australian site.

What a sauna actually costs to run
Electricity is the running cost people either ignore entirely or wildly overestimate, so here is the arithmetic with the working shown.
Take the element wattage, convert to kilowatts, multiply by hours of full-power operation, multiply by your rate. The national average residential usage rate is about 32 c/kWh (Finder, updated 2 September 2026); Canstar Blue put the national range at 24–45 c/kWh and the South Australian average at 43.7 c/kWh, the highest of any state (May 2026). Adelaide readers should use the higher figure.
These calculations assume the heater runs at full draw for the entire session, which it does not. Once the space reaches temperature the thermostat cycles the element, so treat every number below as a ceiling rather than an estimate.

The pattern worth noticing: the gap in running cost between a portable and a cabin is larger proportionally than the gap in purchase price. Over five years at four sessions a week in Adelaide, the cabin's electricity alone is roughly $3,400 on these ceilings. That does not make a cabin a bad purchase, since it seats more people and does more. It does mean the sticker price is not the comparison.
What the money actually buys as you go up
From $150 to $1,195 you buy air temperature. That is the single biggest jump in the whole ladder, because it moves you from a warm humid box into the 80–100°C band the research was conducted in.
From $1,195 to $4,000 you buy a second seat, a stone stove, löyly, and a permanent installation. You also take on an electrician and a significantly higher running cost.
From $4,000 to $10,000 you buy capacity, weatherproofing and build quality: more people, outdoor siting, thicker timber, better door seals, longer warranties. The heat itself does not get meaningfully better. A 90°C cabin at $4,495 and a 90°C cabin at $9,995 produce very similar conditions.
Above $10,000 you are largely buying materials, design and brand. That is a legitimate thing to buy. It is not a physiological upgrade, and nobody should tell you it is.
The research, and what it is indexed to
The reason temperature keeps appearing as the dividing line is that the long-term data is attached to it. Laukkanen and colleagues followed 2,315 Finnish men for about two decades and reported in JAMA Internal Medicine (2015) that sauna use four to seven times a week was linked to 63% lower sudden cardiac death compared with once a week. Zaccardi and colleagues reported a link to 47% lower hypertension risk in the American Journal of Hypertension (2017).
Both are observational, describing associations rather than causes, in men who chose their own habits. What is more directly measured is the acute load: Laukkanen and colleagues, reviewing the evidence in Mayo Clinic Proceedings (2018), describe heart rates of 100–150 bpm during sauna use, comparable to moderate exercise. All of it was generated in traditional dry saunas at roughly 80–100°C, which is why a $150 product stating 54°C sits outside the conversation regardless of how it is marketed.
