Why most chillers cannot use a bathtub
A plumbed chiller works by pumping water out of the tub, through the machine, and back in. That requires two connections to the vessel, and the vessel has to be built with them.

Your bathtub has a tap, an overflow and a drain. None of those is a chiller connection, and you should not be improvising one. Drilling a bath is not a project, and running hoses over the rim is a siphon waiting to empty 150 litres onto your bathroom floor while you are at work.
So for a bathtub, hose-connected chillers are out, including the $999 ReGen8 unit that is the cheapest chiller in the country. That is not a judgement on the machines. Several of them are better machines than anything drop-in. They simply need a tub they can attach to, and a bathtub is not that tub.

Does your bathtub have the volume?
Almost certainly, and with room to spare.
A standard Australian bathtub holds roughly 150 to 200 litres filled to a usable sitting depth. A drop-in chiller rated to 320 L covers that comfortably, which means it is not working at its limit and can hold temperature rather than chasing it.
Measure yours if you want certainty: fill it to where you would sit, then work out the volume from the dimensions, or fill it using a known container. Most people find they use less water than they expected, because sitting depth is well below the overflow.
Tub materials, and whether they matter
Acrylic is the most common bath material in Australian homes. A probe in the water does not touch it, so there is nothing to react with, and acrylic is unaffected by cold water.
Enamelled steel is common in older houses and conducts heat considerably better than acrylic, which means it loses cold faster. It works, and your chiller will run a little more.
Fibreglass behaves much like acrylic.

The insulation problem, and the fix
Be clear-eyed about this: a bathtub is designed to be filled with hot water and emptied, not to hold cold water for days. It has no insulation, it sits in a room you heat in winter, and the water surface is fully open.
Most of the heat re-entering a cold tub comes through that open surface. So the fix is a cover, and it is not a marginal improvement. An insulated mat or a fitted cover over the water cuts compressor run time more than any other twenty dollars in this category. Buy one before you buy anything else.
The secondary fix is a bath mat or insulating layer underneath and around, wherever the shape allows. Less effective than the cover, still worth doing if the bath is steel.

The practical things nobody mentions
Where the unit sits
Beside the bath, on a dry surface, with clear air around the condenser side so it can shed heat. Not in a cupboard, not wedged behind the toilet, not anywhere it will get splashed getting in and out.
The power point
Bathroom power outlets in Australia are governed by rules about proximity to water, and many bathrooms have only a shaver socket, which is not suitable. If there is no appropriate outlet at a safe distance, that is a question for a licensed electrician before it is a question about chillers. Do not run an extension lead across a wet bathroom floor. The drain plug
Standard bath plugs leak slowly. Over a day that is barely noticeable; over a week of holding a chilled tub it means topping up and re-cooling. A good quality plug or a proper seal is a small purchase that saves a recurring annoyance.
The bathroom stays occupied
The honest one. A chilled bath sitting at 12°C is a bath nobody can shower over or use. In a one-bathroom house with other people in it, this is the constraint that actually decides the question, and it is worth having the conversation before the delivery arrives.
Depth
A bath is shallower than a purpose-built plunge tub. You can get a full-body immersion by lying back rather than sitting upright, and if you are tall it will be a compromise. This is a real difference in the experience, not a detail.
When a dedicated tub is the better answer
Buy a proper plunge tub if the bathroom is shared and cannot be monopolised, if you want a seated upright immersion at depth, if you want it outdoors so the cold step after a sauna is a few paces away, or if you want the insulation that cuts running cost.

And if your tub is going to be 400 L, size the chiller to it. A unit rated to 320 L in a 400 L tub runs constantly without reaching temperature, which is a sizing mistake that gets blamed on the machine.
What temperature to run it at
Between 10 and 15°C. Royal Life Saving Society Australia's cold water immersion position statement, current as at February 2024, describes that band as generally considered safe for most individuals, and AUSactive publishes the same figure. A 2025 network meta-analysis of 55 randomised trials found 10 to 15 minutes at 11 to 15°C best for perceived soreness.
