How Hot Does a Traditional Sauna Get?

The short answer: traditional Finnish saunas run at 80–100°C. That is the band the Finnish Sauna Society recommends, and it is the band the long-term Finnish research was conducted in. Domestic thermostats commonly allow a 110°C ceiling, Australian cabins state 85 to 90°C as their working temperature, and everything else sold under the word "sauna" runs cooler, in some cases by 50 degrees.

The reason to know the whole map rather than one number is that "sauna" now covers a range from 27°C to 110°C, and the products at opposite ends of it produce entirely different responses in your body. Below is every band, what is in it, and where the figures come from.

80 to 100°C: the traditional band

This is the answer to the question in the title, and it comes from the Finnish Sauna Society, which recommends 80 to 100°C. Humidity between water pours sits around 10 to 20%.

Australian cabins land inside it. Revel's traditional range states 85°C with a 110°C thermostat ceiling. Kiva's Reset cabins state up to 90°C and their Ritual outdoor cabins 90°C with a 110°C ceiling. The Smartmak barrel sold through Wholesale Superstore states 90°C (all September 2026). Portable dry heat sits at the bottom of the band: our own unit states 85°C.

110°C: a thermostat ceiling, not a target

Most domestic sauna thermostats will go to 110°C, and there is a reason almost nobody runs one there.

The World Sauna Championships, held in Heinola, Finland, started each round at 110°C. In the 2010 final, two competitors were removed after six minutes and taken to hospital in critical condition. One of them, the Russian finalist Vladimir Ladyzhensky, died. The other, five-time champion Timo Kaukonen, survived with burns across about 70% of his body. The City of Heinola announced in April 2011 that it would no longer organise the event.

I include that not for drama but because the number 110 appears on a lot of product pages as though higher were straightforwardly better. It is the top of the dial. It is not the setting, and endurance at temperature is not the objective in any sauna tradition worth the name.

65 to 75°C: infrared

Infrared cabins run their air far cooler by design, because they heat you with radiation rather than by heating the room. Kiva's Rise range states up to 75°C and their Radiance Pro range 65 to 70°C; Revel's infrared models state 65 to 70°C (September 2026).

Two of the larger infrared brands in Australia, Clearlight and Sunlighten, do not publish a maximum operating temperature anywhere on their Australian sites. In a category where temperature is the defining variable, that is worth registering before a consultation rather than after.

40 to 65°C: steam

Steam runs coolest of the heated environments, and it has to. HydroSteam, an Australian manufacturer, state approximately 40°C at 100% humidity. ThermaSol recommend 110 to 115°F, which is 43 to 46°C, at about 100% relative humidity.

Portable steam tents sit slightly higher, at 54°C and 65°C on the two currently listed at Kmart, because your head stays outside the tent through a collar rather than inside the saturated air.

Below 40°C: heated rooms

For scale at the bottom end: a Bikram yoga room is standardised at 40.5°C with 40% humidity, and hot yoga more broadly runs 27 to 38°C. People find those rooms hard work, which is a useful reminder that the difficulty of a heated environment depends on what you are doing in it as much as on the thermometer.

What temperature the research was conducted at

The long-term Finnish cohort work was done in traditional dry saunas in the 80 to 100°C band, which is the single most important thing to know when reading any sauna health claim.

Laukkanen and colleagues followed 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men for approximately two decades and reported in JAMA Internal Medicine (2015) that sauna use four to seven times a week was linked to 63% lower sudden cardiac death compared with once a week. The same cohort produced a reported link to 66% lower dementia risk (Laukkanen et al., Age and Ageing, 2017). Zaccardi and colleagues reported a link to 47% lower hypertension risk (American Journal of Hypertension, 2017), and Kunutsor and colleagues a link to roughly 61% lower stroke risk (2018).

These are observational studies. They report associations in men who chose their own sauna habits, not demonstrated causes, and "linked to" is the correct phrase rather than a hedge. What is measured more directly is the acute load: in a 2018 Mayo Clinic Proceedings review, Laukkanen and colleagues describe sauna heart rates reaching 100–150 bpm, the cardiovascular load of moderate exercise, which is a demand on the heart rather than a replacement for training.

Why 90°C air is fine and 90°C steam would injure you

Because dry air carries very little energy and lets you cool yourself, while saturated air delivers a great deal of energy and stops you cooling at the same time.

Evaporating sweat removes roughly 2,400 kilojoules per litre, and in 15% humidity it evaporates as fast as you make it. Saturate the air and that stops entirely, while water vapour begins condensing onto your skin and releasing its latent heat into you. Heat flows in faster and your only defence is gone. That is the whole reason steam rooms must sit at 40 to 46°C, and it is set out with the arithmetic in our dry sauna versus steam sauna piece.

Where you measure changes the number

A sauna is strongly stratified. Hot air rises, so the temperature at ceiling height is substantially above the temperature at the lower bench, often by tens of degrees in a tall cabin.

That matters in two ways. Manufacturers' stated maximums and your own thermometer will disagree if you are measuring at different heights, and you can change your own experience considerably by moving benches without touching the thermostat. In Finland the lower bench is where beginners and children sit, and that is not a courtesy, it is a different environment.

What beginners should start at

Lower bench, shorter round, and do not chase a number.

Five to ten minutes on a lower bench at whatever the room is running is a complete first session. Come out, cool down properly, and see how you feel before deciding whether to go back in. Build duration before you build temperature, and build both across weeks rather than within one session.

One narrow and specific note: Garolla and colleagues studied ten men using a sauna twice a week for three months (Human Reproduction, 2013) and found reduced sperm count and motility which had fully recovered within six months, which is relevant only if you are actively trying to conceive.
