Can You Put a Portable Sauna in a Garage?

The short answer: a garage is one of the best places to put a portable sauna, with one real caveat: ambient temperature. Reaching 85°C from a 5°C garage in a Melbourne or Adelaide winter is an 80-degree climb rather than the 64 degrees you face from a heated room, so heat-up takes longer and holding temperature costs more. Everything else about a garage suits a sauna better than the inside of a house.

Ambient temperature, the one real problem

Why a cold garage costs you twice

Heat-up time scales with the size of the climb. From a heated 21°C living room, reaching 85°C is a 64-degree rise. From a 5°C garage on a July morning, it is 80 degrees, a quarter more.

The second cost is less obvious and it does not go away once you are up to temperature. Heat escapes an enclosure in proportion to the difference between inside and outside, so a unit sitting in a 5°C garage loses heat faster than the same unit in a 21°C room, continuously, for the whole session. The element spends more of its duty cycle replacing that loss.

What to do about it

Start the unit earlier, and judge readiness by a thermometer rather than by the stated heat-up figure. A thermohygrometer is a small purchase that turns this from guesswork into a reading.

Close the garage door. An open roller door turns the space into an outdoor space with a roof, and the loss rate climbs accordingly. Shutting it also cuts the draught across the unit, which matters more than people expect.

Position the sauna away from the roller door and away from any gap under it, which is usually the coldest part of the room and often the draughtiest. A back corner against an internal wall shared with the house is the warmest spot in most garages.

In summer, the problem inverts. An uninsulated Australian garage under a metal roof can be brutally hot in February, and a sauna session in a 40°C room is a different proposition. Ventilate before and after, and consider that the garage may be a winter location and somewhere else the right answer in summer.

Concrete is the ideal floor

This is the garage's biggest advantage and it gets no attention.

A concrete slab is level, load-bearing, heat-indifferent and wipeable. You need no protective mat, no worry about dents in carpet pile, no concern about sweat reaching something absorbent. Spilled water is a non-event. If the slab has a fall to a drain, better still.

Two things to check. First, that the slab is actually level where you plan to put the unit, since garage floors often fall toward the door by design. A frame sitting on a slope is a frame under uneven load. Second, that the spot is dry, because some garages take water under the roller door in heavy rain and a unit stored on a patch that occasionally floods will not last.

Bare concrete is cold underfoot, which is a comfort issue rather than a technical one. A small mat at the doorway for your feet solves it without needing to cover the whole footprint.

Dust, which is the garage's real maintenance cost

Garages are dusty in a way that living rooms are not. Brake dust, concrete dust, sawdust if you use the space for anything, and general grit blown under the door.

That dust settles on the heater. A heating element with a layer of dust on it produces a smell on the next heat-up as the dust burns off, which is harmless but unpleasant, and over time an accumulation on and around the element is worth avoiding.

Power: garage sockets and extension leads

A 1500 W heating load belongs in a wall socket, plugged in directly. Australian safety guidance is consistent that high-draw heating appliances should go into fixed outlets rather than onto powerboards or thin extension leads, and a garage is exactly where people are tempted to compromise, because garage sockets are often few and badly placed.

If the only outlet is at the far end, the right answers in order are: move the sauna, or have a licensed electrician add an outlet where you need one. Adding a general power outlet is a modest job, and it is a fraction of what a traditional cabin's dedicated 25 to 32 A circuit would cost. What you should not do is run a 1500 W heater on a cheap lightweight lead for an hour at a time.

Also check what else is on that circuit. Garage circuits often serve a fridge, a freezer, a workshop bench and outdoor lighting all at once. A 1500 W load has plenty of headroom on a 10 A socket by itself, but if the same circuit is already carrying a second freezer and a compressor, that is a question for an electrician rather than for arithmetic. Why garages suit saunas anyway

Space is the obvious one. A garage usually has room for the unit to stay assembled permanently, which removes the ten minutes of setup that quietly kills the habit in a smaller home.

Tolerance is the other. Nobody minds what a garage looks like. You are not negotiating with a partner about a tent in the bedroom, or packing it away before visitors. It can be a sauna corner, with a hook for a towel and somewhere to put a bottle of water.

And the cold step is right there. A garage often opens onto a yard, a hose, or at minimum a cold concrete floor to stand on, which makes the hot-then-cold rhythm the Finnish tradition is built around far easier to actually do.

Sheds and carports

A closed shed behaves like a garage: same concrete advantage if it is slabbed, same dust problem, usually worse insulation and therefore a colder start. Check the power situation carefully, since sheds are frequently fed by a single circuit or a long sub-main.

A carport is not the same thing, because it is not enclosed. An open-sided structure is outdoors as far as heat loss goes, and running an electric heater in a space exposed to weather introduces problems an enclosed garage does not have.
