The short answer: a traditional sauna runs at 80–100°C in dry air at roughly 10–20% humidity. A home steam room runs at about 40–46°C at close to 100% humidity. That 45-degree gap is not a difference in intensity, it is a physical necessity, and it drives everything else about the two products including which one you can realistically build in an Australian house.
The install difference is the part that actually decides most purchases. A sauna is a dry timber box that needs an electrician. A steam room is a fully vapour-proofed wet room that needs waterproofing, a floor draining at the right fall, a drain line rated for 80–85°C discharge water, and a plumber alongside the electrician. One of those is a weekend with a sparky. The other is a bathroom renovation.

Why steam has to run so much cooler
Because your cooling system stops working. Sweat removes heat from your body by evaporating, and evaporation needs somewhere for the water vapour to go. In a sauna at 15% relative humidity, sweat leaves your skin almost as fast as you make it, carrying a large amount of energy with it. That is the only reason a human can sit in 90°C air.
In a steam room at close to 100% humidity, the air already holds all the water it can. Sweat forms, sits there, and runs off you having removed almost nothing. Your primary defence against heat is switched off, so the temperature has to be held far lower or the exposure becomes genuinely dangerous. HydroSteam, an Australian manufacturer, state approximately 40°C at 100% humidity; ThermaSol recommend 110 to 115°F, which is 43 to 46°C, at about 100% relative humidity.

What a sauna needs
A prefabricated cabin, a level floor, clearance around the heater to spec, an air inlet low near the stove and an outlet high on the opposite wall, and a licensed electrician to install a hardwired dedicated circuit. Verified requirements from September 2026 listings: Kiva's Reset 4-person specifies 25 A, their Ritual outdoor cabins 25 to 30 A, and Revel's Solaris 4-person 32 A. The room around it does not need to be waterproofed, because a sauna is a dry appliance.
What a steam room needs
Considerably more, and Viking Sauna's Australian planning guide sets out the requirements plainly. The enclosure must be 100% vapour-proofed. The floor must be non-slip and slope towards a floor drain. Walls and ceiling need insulation to prevent heat loss. The steam outlet sits 40 cm above floor level with at least 70 cm of clear path before it meets a fixed object.
Then the drainage, which is the detail most people have never considered. Discharge water from the generator leaves at 80–85°C. Viking specify copper pipe, 20 mm preferred, or at minimum non-PVC for the first five to six metres, running into a copper tun dish. You cannot run that into standard PVC waste. Add the generator's own service clearance, 300 mm around the sides and top on the Tylö unit, and a single or three-phase supply with an isolating switch.
That is a waterproofer, a tiler, a plumber and an electrician. In an existing Australian bathroom it usually means tanking the room from scratch. I am not saying do not do it. I am saying that anyone comparing a $7,622 generator to a $3,747 sauna cabin is comparing two numbers that do not represent the same thing at all.
What each costs in Australia
Saunas publish their prices. Steam generators mostly do not, which makes this comparison harder than it should be. Of the established Australian steam sellers I checked in September 2026, Viking Sauna and Nordic Sauna Company both quote on request, and only Sauna & Steam Australia published a hard figure: a Tylö Steam Home 3/6/9 kW generator at $7,622, rated for rooms of 2 to 16 m³.
Self-contained steam cubicles are the exception and the honest bargain of this comparison. National Apollo in Sydney list a 90 × 90 × 220 cm curve steam cubicle at $2,900, reduced from $3,450, a 100 × 100 cm at $3,000, and a 120 × 120 cm at $3,550. These are complete units rather than rooms, so they sidestep most of the tanking and drainage work above.
Against that: Revel's Kuusi 2-person sauna cabin from $3,747, Kiva's Reset 2-person at $4,495 reduced from $5,995, and a Smartmak 4-person barrel at $3,999 presale against a $6,500 regular price (September 2026).
Maintenance, and the thing nobody mentions until later
A sauna dries itself. It runs at 90°C in low humidity and any moisture introduced by sweat or löyly evaporates during the session. Maintenance is wiping benches, occasionally replacing stones as they degrade, and keeping the vents clear.
A steam room is a wet room by design and stays damp between uses. That is a mould problem waiting to be managed rather than a hypothetical one, particularly in a humid Australian summer or a bathroom without good airflow. Better generators mitigate the plant side: the Tylö unit has a two-litre stainless reservoir with automatic emptying 60 minutes after shutdown, an automatic flush clean, self-cleaning calcium-repellent electrodes and a built-in filter. What it cannot do is dry your tiles and grout for you.
If you live somewhere with hard water, ask specifically about descaling intervals before you buy. None of the Australian sellers I checked publish water consumption in litres per hour, which is a gap worth pushing on when you get a quote.
The research base, stated fairly
The long-term cohort data belongs to dry saunas. Laukkanen and colleagues followed 2,315 Finnish men for about two decades and reported in JAMA Internal Medicine (2015) that sauna use four to seven times a week was linked to 63% lower sudden cardiac death compared with once a week. The same cohort was linked to 66% lower dementia risk (Age and Ageing, 2017), Zaccardi and colleagues reported a link to 47% lower hypertension risk (American Journal of Hypertension, 2017), and Kunutsor and colleagues a link to roughly 61% lower stroke risk (2018).
All observational. They show associations in men who chose their own habits, not demonstrated causes, and the honest phrasing is "linked to". The acute load is firmer: a 2018 Mayo Clinic Proceedings review by Laukkanen and colleagues describes sauna heart rates of 100–150 bpm, comparable to moderate exercise and not a replacement for it.
There is no equivalent twenty-year cohort for steam rooms that I can find. That is an absence of evidence rather than evidence of absence, and it would be dishonest to present it as a finding against steam. What it does mean is that if the research is what is drawing you to this category, the research is about the dry side of it.
Choose steam if
- You find very hot dry air unpleasant on your airways, and warm wet air is more comfortable for you
- You want a self-contained cubicle rather than a room, where $2,900 buys a complete unit and skips most of the build
- You are renovating a bathroom anyway, so the waterproofing and drainage are already in the scope and the marginal cost is much lower
- You simply prefer it, which is a legitimate reason and needs no further justification
Choose traditional if
- You want the conditions the long-term research was conducted in
- You want löyly, which only a stone stove can produce
- You do not want to tank a room, slope a floor, or run an 85°C drain line
- You want it outdoors, where a sauna works and a steam room becomes considerably harder
- You want the lowest possible maintenance burden over ten years
