Sauna Stones vs Portable Dry Heat: The Real Difference

The short answer: they reach the same temperature and they are not the same experience. A stone-stove cabin holds 10 to 20 kg of rock that buffers the heat and lets you pour water for löyly, from about $3,747 plus an electrician. A portable dry-heat unit delivers 85°C of real dry air from a wall socket for $1,195, with no stones and no löyly. The stones are the whole difference, and they matter more than the price does.

I want to be straight about the position I am writing from. Enhanced Human makes the portable side of this comparison, and the honest thing to say at the top is that a stone-stove cabin is the better sauna. What follows is an attempt to explain exactly what the stones do, so you can decide whether you need them rather than take my word either way.

Kiuas is the Finnish word for a sauna stove. The Kiuas Dry Sauna is a product made by Enhanced Human, an Australian recovery brand, named after the stove but built as a portable dry-heat alternative to a traditional cabin. It has no stones. Naming a stoveless product after the stove is a decision worth owning on the one page that is actually about stoves.

What the stones actually do

Thermal mass, which is more than a technicality

Run the numbers and the scale becomes obvious. Stone has a specific heat of roughly 0.8 kilojoules per kilogram per degree, so 20 kg of it holds about 16 kJ for every degree of temperature. The air in a six-cubic-metre cabin, at roughly 1.2 kg per cubic metre and 1.005 kJ per kilogram per degree, holds about 7.2 kJ per degree.

So the stones store more than twice as much heat per degree as every cubic metre of air in the room combined, and they sit considerably hotter than that air does. That reservoir is why a cabin behaves the way it does.

Open the door on a stone-stove cabin and the hot air leaves. The stones do not care. They dump stored energy straight back into the space and the room is back at temperature within a minute. Open the door on a portable and the element has to rebuild from scratch, because there is no reservoir to draw on.

That stability is not a luxury feature. It is why a cabin feels steady and a portable rewards keeping the door shut.

Löyly, which is the actual point

Löyly is the burst of steam when you ladle water onto the stones. UNESCO's 2020 inscription of Finnish sauna culture describes it as "the spirit or steam released by casting water onto a stack of heated stones", which is a better translation than anything shorter because the word carries both meanings.

Mechanically the effect is small and the sensation is not. Air temperature barely moves. Relative humidity jumps from around 15 percent to perhaps 30 percent for thirty seconds, and in that window your sweat stops evaporating efficiently. Evaporation is your primary cooling mechanism, so removing it briefly makes the identical 85°C room feel suddenly and dramatically hotter. Then it fades, and you do it again.

People who grew up with saunas do not discuss humidity percentages. They discuss the quality of the löyly, which depends on the stones, how hot they are, how much water you use and how you throw it. That is not mysticism. It is the same distinction a cook makes between heat and good heat.

The ritual, which is not a soft factor

The ladle, the bucket, the rounds, the pause outside, going back in. A Finnish sauna session is a structured thing with a rhythm, and the stones are what you act on to produce it. Without them a session is simply sitting somewhere hot until you decide to stop.

What portable dry heat gives you

The same temperature territory

This part is genuinely equivalent and worth stating plainly. The Finnish Sauna Society recommends 80 to 100°C. Australian stone-stove cabins state 85 to 90°C working temperatures with a 110°C ceiling. A portable dry-heat unit states 85°C.

Same band, at the lower end of it. The air is dry, it is heated by convection and radiation, and your body responds to being in a hot room rather than to a panel warming your skin. It is not a diluted version of the thing; it is the thing, minus the stove.

A wall socket

At 1500 W it plugs into a standard 10 A outlet. No dedicated circuit, no licensed electrician, no switchboard, no landlord conversation, no body corporate application. Cabin stoves at 3.5 to 9 kW need hardwired circuits rated 25 A to 32 A on current Australian listings, which is a real cost and a real permission problem.

Impermanence, which cuts both ways

It goes up in about ten minutes and folds away. That is a disadvantage if you want a room that is always there and an advantage if you rent, share, or expect to move.

The portable cannot produce löyly, cannot hold temperature through a door opening the way a stone mass does, and cannot seat a second person. Those are not gaps waiting to be engineered away. A stoveless enclosure running off a 2,300 W socket has no route to any of them.

The cabin cannot go in a rental, cannot be installed without an electrician, cannot come with you when you move, and cannot be put away when the room needs to be a room again. Those are equally structural.

Who should choose which

Buy the cabin if you own your home, have the space permanently, can run the circuit, want more than one person in there, or want löyly. That last one on its own is sufficient. If the ladle is part of the picture in your head, nothing without stones will satisfy you and buying one first will just cost you $1,195 on the way to the cabin.

Buy the portable if a cabin is not available to you: renting, sharing, an apartment, a room with another job, no spare circuit, or a budget that reaches $1,200 and not $4,500. In that situation the comparison is not portable versus cabin. It is portable versus nothing, and 85°C of real dry air is a long way from nothing.

On naming a stoveless sauna after a stove

It is a fair thing to raise, and I would rather raise it myself. Kiuas means the stove: the stone-topped heater, the thing this article has just spent a thousand words explaining that our product does not have.

The name is a nod to the category and its origin rather than a claim about the hardware, which is why every page we publish says plainly that the unit has no stones and no löyly. If it read as a claim, that would be a problem with our naming and not with your reading of it.

Frequently asked questions

What do sauna stones actually do?

Two things. They store heat, holding more than twice as much per degree as all the air in a typical cabin, so the room recovers within a minute after the door opens. And they let you pour water for löyly, the steam burst that briefly raises humidity and makes the same air feel far hotter.

Is dry heat the same without stones?

The air temperature and humidity can be the same, so the thermal conditions match. What changes is stability and ritual: no stored heat to buffer door openings, and no löyly. A stoveless unit delivers the conditions of a traditional sauna without the mechanism that defines one.

Can you pour water in a portable sauna?

Not on the Kiuas Dry Sauna, and not on any portable with an exposed electric element rather than a stone bed. There is nothing to vaporise the water safely, and pouring water onto an electrical heater is dangerous. If löyly matters to you, a stone-stove cabin is the only option.

Why do Finns use stones?

Which is better for a small home?

A portable, usually, and not because it is the better sauna. It needs no circuit, no permanent footprint and no permission, and it folds away when the room has another job. If you own the space and can install a cabin, the cabin is better on every experiential measure.

Do infrared saunas have stones?

No. Infrared cabins heat you with radiant panels while the air stays at roughly 45 to 75°C, so there is no stove and no stone bed, and löyly is not possible at any price point. That is a different mechanism again rather than a version of dry heat.
